Unglaublich – Incredibile. Sensationalism, Document, Reality

2011 was the year of Fotodoks premiers: with Italy we invited our first guest country. The group exhibition was presented at the Münchner Stadtmuseum for the first time and the festival centre with a bookstand by the Hamburg Deichtorhallen moved into the art space MaximiliansForum. Unbelievable and new as well were the first festival catalogue and cooperations with MAGNUM Photos and the documentary film festival DOK.fest.

Between Information and Infotainment

The exhibition UNGLAUBLICH – Incredibile. Sensationalism, Document, Reality focused on the tension between credibility and sensation, and raised the question how convincing documentary photography is today, moving between information, infotainment and illustration. Parallel at the 'Kunstfoyer der Versicherungskammer Bayern' the first Paolo Pellegrin retrospective was shown and Armin Smailovic presented his work Sound of Silence at Kirsch&Co.

Unbelievably Normal

For his work Domestico the Italian photographer Bruno Pulici was chosen by an international jury for the Fotodoks-Prize 2011, sponsored by Leica. His intimate and at the same time irritating family portraits challenge stereotypes and notions of normality. After the award ceremony the winner was celebrated during the Fotodoks- and Long Night of Museums party!

MAGNUM and Author Photography

At MaximiliansForum lectures by MAGNUM-photographers Christopher Anderson, Thomas Dworzak and Moises Saman, panel discussions with Timm Klotzek, Eva Leitolf, Maurice Weiss, Gürsoy Dogtas, Dr. Ulrich Pohlmann, Lars Willumeit amongst others, as well as screenings and selected books at the Deichtorhallen-bookstand offered insights into contemporary documentary photography and Italian author photography.
