Achtung?! – Respect, Control, Change

In its fifth year Fotodoks and the partner country Great Britain discussed the surveillance of places and people, the dividing line between public and private spaces as well as the responsibility of the photographer towards his medium and protagonists.

Attention and Appreciation

As an indication, warning or appeal the word , Achtung' is known to create attention - not just in the German language. In German 'Achtung' also signifies appreciation, respect and a mindful togetherness. The exhibition ACHTUNG?! focused on the complex problems that contemporary documentary photography is facing: What issues deserve attention? Who controls the image? How does the image control the world? Who gives attention to whom?

Mindful Documentary Photography

During the festival week Simon Norfolk, Christopher Morris, Kai Wiedenhöfer and Paul Lowe asked for the need for and function of images from crisis areas. The British photographers Anastasia Taylor-Lind, Jocelyn Bain-Hogg and Edmund Clark highlighted the state and value of photographic documents and documentary. Further guests were Thomas Seelig, Heidi Specker and Martin Fengel as well as the Deichtorhallen-bookshop and DOK.fest.

News, News, News

Inspired by the ‚yellow press’ – and yes, we confess, also by fish & chips, wrapped in newsprint paper – our yearly individually designed festival catalogue came along as a newspaper in 2012. Designed by Bureau Mirko Borsche and for the first time free of charge for all visitors, this loose form of presentation also questioned the contextualisation and combination of images.
